After undergraduate study at the University of Science and Technology of China, Dong Lai came to the US for graduate study, receiving Ph.D. in theoretical physics from Cornell in 1994. He joined the Astronomy faculty in the Fall of 1997 after three years as a postdoctoral fellow at Caltech. He has held visiting positions at Institute for Advanced Study, Harvard University, Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics, Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics, and several research research intitutues in China (National and Shanghai Astronomical Observatories, Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiaotong University). His research lies in theoretical astrophysics.

1. Compact Objects: Neutron stars, black holes, white dwarfs, gravitational waves.
2. Astrophysics of Exoplanets: Dynamics and formation, protoplanetary disks.
3. Astrophysical Fluid Dynamics in general: Disks, waves, instabilities, tides, celestial mechanics, etc.
