El Moutamid named affiliate of African Academy of Sciences

Maryame El Moutamid has been named an affiliate member of the African Academy of Sciences (AAS). Moutamid is a research associate at the Cornell Center for Astrophysics and Planetary Science and an affiliate of the Carl Sagan Institute. Moutamid’s research concerns planetary ring dynamics and satellite orbital dynamics and their connections with giant planet interior structure.

The African Academy of Sciences (AAS) is a non-profit organization that seeks to address Africa’s developmental challenges through science. The AAS Affiliate Membership Programme supports the professional growth of young and early-to-mid career scientists in their efforts to develop into outstanding research leaders in their fields and selected 25 new fellows this year.

Moutamid completed a PhD at Paris Observatory in 2013. During her postdoctoral training, she worked on data from the ISS (imaging Science System) and VIMS (Visual Infrafred Mapping Spectormeter) instruments onboard the Cassini spacecraft. She was also involved in the discovery of the ring system around the asteroid Chariklo.
