Research
Cornell Astronomy research.
Observation and Research Facilities utilized by the Department of Astronomy.
Members of the Astronomy Department engage in a wide variety of
research projects.
The following are large astronomical research groups at Cornell. Members of the Astronomy Department are involved with these groups, either as direct members or through collaborations.
Research in the Astronomy Department is both
theoretical and observational in nature. The observational work covers
the entire electromagnetic spectrum from radio waves to gamma-rays. A
wide variety of national observatories and satellites are utilized to conduct research.
Space exploration is the use of space technology to explore outer space. Physical exploration of space is conducted both by human spaceflights and by robotic spacecraft. While the observation of objects in space, known as astronomy, predates reliable recorded history, it was the development of large and relatively efficient rockets during the early 20th century that allowed physical space exploration to become a reality.
