Research Groups

Members of the Astronomy Department engage in a wide variety of research projects.

The following are large astronomical research groups at Cornell. Members of the Astronomy Department are involved with these groups, either as direct members or through collaborations.

  • ALFALFA
  • Infrared Astronomy
  • US-Russia Collab. on Plasma Astrophysics
  • US-Kazakhstan Astrophysics Collab.
  • Submilimeter Astronomy

ALFALFA

The Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA (ALFALFA) survey is an on-going second generation blind extragalactic HI survey exploiting Arecibo's superior sensitivity, angular resolution and digital technology to conduct a census of the local HI universe over a cosmologically significant volume.

Plasma Astrophysics Group

The group’s main effort has been focused on developing detailed physical models of astrophysical environments where both rotation and ordered and/or chaotic magnetic field are important. These include the origin of astrophysical jets from magnetized accretion disks, the accretion of plasma to rotating magnetized stars. These problems are unavoidably complicated in that they involve calculations of multi-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic flows.

Submillimeter Astrophysics

Submillimeter Astrophysics is the branch of observational astronomy that is conducted at submillimetre wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum.
