ASTR4445: Intro to General Relativity
Credit Hours: 4 Instructor: Eanna Flanagan Prerequisites: Offered as alternative to more comprehensive, two-semester graduate sequence Phys. 553 & 554 (Astro 509-510) Typically offered: Fall Crosslisted with: PHY 4445 Homepage: http://www.astro.cornell.edu/%7Eflanagan/ph445/index.html
One-semester introduction to general relativity, which teaches physics concepts and phenomenology while keeping mathematical formalism to a minimum.General relativity is a fundamental cornerstone of physics that underlies several of the most exciting areas of current research. These areas include theoretical high-energy physics and the search for a quantum theory of gravity, relativistic astrophysics, and in particular cosmology, where there have been several ground breaking observations over the last few years. It uses the new textbook "Gravity: An Introduction to Einstein's General Relativity" by James Hartle.
