ASTR4431: Introduction to Astrophysics & Space Sciences I
Credit Hours: 4 Prerequisites: mathematics above the 200 level and physics above the 300 level; Physics 443 is recommended Typically offered: Fall Homepage: http://www.astro.cornell.edu/academics/courses/astro431
Overview of modern astrophysical concepts for physical science majors. Major topics include stellar formation, structure and evolution, stellar atmospheres, compact objects (white dwarf, neutron star, and black holes), planets, and brown dwarfs. Current research problems in these areas are introduced along the way. The emphasis is on using fundamental principles of physics to explain astronomical phenomena. A variety of physics, including elements of atomic and molecular physics, solid state physics and fluid mechanics, are introduced or reviewed in a quick practical fashion in order to be put to use in solving astrophysics puzzles.
